“Roots” traces my personal journey as an immigrant from Jordan to the United States. The initial part of this project shows my family background and the various factors that motivated me to seek opportunities in the United States. Then, as the project tracks my trajectory from Amman to Atlanta, and to Boston and New York City, I focus on the experiences that have shaped my time in the United States and have contributed to the formation of my identity, including my many encounters with evangelical Christianity. By drawing on images and documents from along this path, in addition to my own photographs, I aim to give a fuller picture of my experiences. While personal in specifics, “Roots” addresses larger themes of identity formation, migration, the opportunities and challenges that immigrants encounter, and the ways that people of different backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions interact in this era of globalization.
